BIO

Lingyi Kong is a New York-based artist, designer, and educator whose work explores the intersections between artist books, generative code, and poetic systems. Their recent project, Goodbye, Icarus, investigates narrative through material resonance and computational media.

Lingyi is particularly interested in the relationship between traditional and technological forms—examining how AI can meaningfully intersect with both artistic and pedagogical practice. Their artist books have been exhibited internationally at venues including Design Incubator, CBAA, SECAC, 4C Gallery, Parsons and RISD. Lingyi currently teaches interaction and communication design at Parsons School of Design.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice begins with the rhythms of the natural world—waves, wind, and silence—translated into data, then into code, and finally into books. Using programming languages such as Python and TouchDesigner, I analyze sound frequencies to generate visual forms that are projected onto paper, foil, or mirrored surfaces. These works merge digital systems with the tactile intimacy of bookmaking, offering a bridge between algorithmic structure and material sensitivity.

Artist books, for me, are temporal architectures—spaces where narrative unfolds not only through sequence and image, but also through weight, texture, and reflection. Whether through silver foiling, mirrored pages, or kinetic installations, my books invite multi-sensory interaction and embodied engagement.

In June 2025, I presented my work at the College Book Art Association conference at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where I contributed to a panel talk on how emerging technologies intersect with contemporary book practices. There, I discussed how code and interaction design can reframe the book not merely as a static object, but as a generative and performative medium.

As both an artist and educator, I view my work as a dialogue between precision and poetics—between the logic of computation and the resonance of intuition. I believe that even in the digital age, the artist book remains a site of radical possibility: a space for slow thinking, deep presence, and narrative experimentation.
