Tour A: Art & Literature Laboratory, Tandem Press

Arts + Literature Laboratory is a vibrant contemporary arts center dedicated to fostering creativity and community through the visual, literary, and performing arts. Featuring a dynamic schedule of exhibitions, readings, concerts, and educational programs, the Laboratory provides a platform for artistic expression and innovation. Join us for a tour of our facilities, meet with our curators and artists to learn about our interdisciplinary programs, and explore the creative works that make this community-driven space a cornerstone of Madison's arts scene.

Tandem Press is a publisher of fine art prints that hosts internationally renowned artists in its studio space, assisting them as they create original fine art editions. Using an array of traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques, Tandem Press stands at the forefront of research, experimentation, and new developments in the field of printmaking and has established itself as a leader among international fine art print publishers. Join us for a tour of our facilities,  meet with our collaborative printers and curators to hear about how we work with artists, and peruse prints available for sale. 

Tour B: Madison Bubbler, Communication, Polka! Press

Madison Bubbler

We champion artistic expression as a genuine form of storytelling in Madison Public Library and in our community spaces. Our mission is to hold space for visual art and hands-on learning in our public libraries to celebrate ideas, elevate personal narratives, and promote creativity, curiosity, and connection within the local community.

Communication

Communication is an all-ages arts and music nonprofit dedicated to cultivating stronger bonds throughout the creative community in and beyond Madison and committed to antiracist work, mutual aid, and equitable compensation for artists and musicians. Communication is home to a Risograph Print Collective wherein local artists pay to have access to Risograph machines to produce prints, zines, and other materials. Attendees will  get a Risograph demonstration, learn about the collective’s structure, and check out local prints and publications in Communication’s shop. 

Polka! Press

Polka! Press is a collective of artists and designers working alongside one another in a shared makerspace with letterpress, relief, and screen printing equipment. Polka! Press promotes a vibrant local printmaking culture by offering access to printmaking facilities and providing educational opportunities to the Madison community.

Tour C: Kohler Art Library, Chazen Museum Chen Family Study Room

Kohler Art Library

Experience the touch, texture, and materiality of artists' books from the Kohler Art Library’s distinguished collection of over 2,000 works. A curated selection highlights interdisciplinary collaborations, innovative structures, and the joy of hands-on exploration. Representing over 200 presses and artists, the collection spans themes of printmaking, typography, papermaking, graphic design, fine binding, and more. Come discover the artistry and craftsmanship that make these books a tactile delight.

Chazen Museum Chen Family Study Room

Discover the Chazen Museum of Art’s collection through a selection of artworks inspired by CBAA! During this behind-the-scenes guided visit in the Simon & Rosemary Chen Family Study Room for Works on Paper, we will examine unique pieces that intersect with book arts through medium, purpose, and cultural impact. Attendees can expect to see collection highlights from Edo Japan, Early Modern Europe, Mughal India, and examples of 20th and 21st Century American prints.

Tour D:  The Arthur H. Robinson Map Library, The Wisconsin Historical Society

The Arthur H. Robinson Map Library

The Arthur H. Robinson Map Library, a unit of the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, serves a wide range of users from academic and non-academic communities. The library is located in Science Hall and is named after Professor Arthur H. Robinson, the well-known cartographer who taught on campus from 1945 to 1980. It is a global cartographic research collection, with holdings of ~280,000 maps and ~260,000 historic aerial photos. Primarily a 20th century collection in scope, geographic strengths include Africa, Asia, Europe, the United States, the state of Wisconsin, and the City of Madison.

Wisconsin Historical Society

The tour of the Wisconsin Historical Society will give attendees a chance to peek into the spaces and collections of the Historical Society. The Society’s Library & Archives holds one of the preeminent North American history collections in the world and is particularly strong in newspapers and other periodicals. The tour will showcase highlights from the collection as well as touch on architectural details of the 1900 Beaux-Arts building.
