MACY CHADWICK

Recipient of the CBAA Emerging Educator Award 2012

Macy Chadwick, originally from Rhode Island, now lives and works in Oakland, California where she teaches classes at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, San Francisco Art Institute, and San Francisco Center for the Book. She has taught workshops at Wells College, Colorado College, New York Center for the Book, California College of the Arts, and the Savannah College of Art and Design.

She received an MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2003 and assisted book artist Julie Chen at Flying Fish Press in Berkeley for three years. She also publishes artist’s books and limited-edition prints under the imprint In Cahoots Press. Her work is included in over 30 university and college collections and numerous private collections in the U.S. and abroad, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Yale University Special Collections, and University of Washington, Seattle to mention just a few.

Macy has received several awards and fellowships for her work and teaching, including a residency at the Venice (Italy) Printmaking Studio in 2011, and has been a speaker, moderator, and panelist at various conferences and symposia. For the past year Macy has served as the Co-Chair for the College Book Art Association 2012 Bay Area conference as she has helped plan and organize the many activities of the upcoming conference.

Charles Hobson, a teaching colleague at the San Francisco Art Institute, had these words to offer in nominating Macy for the CBAA Emerging Educator Award 2012; …Her strength as a teacher, the highest level of artist bookwork, and strong support for the book arts professionally... She is an active creator of books and clearly shares the passion she has for her bookwork with her students. I see her as one of the greatest of the young teachers in the field and my own teaching about the artist book has been elevated by teaching with her.

I have watched as she has loaded students up with new information in a way that has called on their highest energies and artistic imaginations to be employed in their work. There is some characteristic of her manner and presentation which makes students say, “Oh, yes, I can do this. I can make it mine.”

With this award, the CBAA seeks to honor Macy Chadwick with the Emerging Educator Award 2012 for accomplishments that have contributed to the advancement of the broad profession of the book arts.
