2026 Paper and Book Intensive | May 17-28 | Applications Open (18 Jan 2026)

General Applications for PBI 2026 are now open!!

To apply, visit http://www.paperbookintensive.org/ and access the application under the PBI 2026 tab.

The 2026 Paper and Book Intensive takes place May 17-28, 2026. Applications received within the first two weeks of the application period will be given priority, so timely application is encouraged.

Acceptance letters are sent out starting in early February, and we continue to accept applications through April 15 or until all spots are confirmed and filled. Once all spots are filled, remaining applicants are put on a waiting list. Those placed on the waiting list are notified about openings as soon as one becomes available. The waiting list remains open until May 1.

Montana Institute for Book Arts - Summer Workshops REGISTRATION OPEN (11 Mar 2026)

The MONTANA INSTITUTE FOR BOOK ARTS is a summer program that brings fine artists, writers, craftspeople, and motivated students from across the country to share their professional knowledge and love of bookmaking. The two sessions are split between a historic research station on Flathead Lake and the University of Montana's campus in Missoula. Students will be able to choose from a range of courses, including bookbinding, papermaking, letter carving, and a printing workshop on a 1936 Hacker Test press, home of Bear Scratch Press.

The Institute supports high quality craftsmanship within a flourishing literary and arts community. Between immersive workshops, there will be opportunities to visit the MONTANA MUSEUM OF ART AND CULTURE, where instructors at the Institute will exhibit their art, readings, wilderness excursions, cozy nights under the stars, and a chance to meet fellow lovers of the printed word.

Bonnie Stahlecker Workshop: Whip Stitch Accordions REGISTRATION OPEN (11 Mar 2026)

Bonnie Stahlecker is offering an online bookbinding class: Whip Stitch Accordions. You will create two exceptional accordion books in this class that uniquely showcase your artwork. The whip stitching holds the rigid panels together with an ingenious hyper-flexible hinge mechanism. In addition to the main lessons, detailed instructions are provided on covering non-90-degree corners and curves. And, as a bonus, there is information on making enclosures for your books.

The course runs over three weeks: May 16, 23, and 30, 2026. The format is pre-recorded tutorial videos with detailed PDF handouts. A kit accompanying this workshop will be mailed before the first lesson.
