The Nomination Process

CBAA members are invited to nominate candidates or self-nominate by emailing nominations to the Nominating and Membership Committee. Please email Karen Baldner, Vice Chair for Nominations, at kbaldner@iu.edu. Nominees must be willing to serve.

Nominations are due by September 1.

Nominations should include the following information, which will be shared with the board:

Affiliation (if any), interest in Board position, and a brief statement of nominee’s qualifications by nominator
Nominee’s brief biography
Nominee’s CV
Candidate Interview

COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR

Are you passionate about book arts and skilled in connecting people through clear, engaging communication? The Communications Chair plays a vital role in shaping the voice of CBAA. This position oversees the organization’s social media and website updates, and coordinates communications across committees and with the broader community.

Key Responsibilities:

Develops and implements communication strategies with Vice Chairs and committee members
Maintains content on the CBAA website
Assists Vice Chairs with scheduled content for digital platforms (email and social media)
Ensures consistent branding and messaging
Collaborates with board members and committees to help promote conferences, meetings, other events, and initiatives

Helpful Skills:

Familiarity with digital tools for the web and social media
Graphic design and visual storytelling experience is a plus
Organized, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines

COMMUNICATIONS: Vice Chair for Member Relations

Creates and distributes the bi-monthly e-blast that communicates important info to membership. Assists with projects as requested by the communications chair.

EDITORIAL BOARD

Collaborates with the Editor to review progress; develop strategic goals; approve journal policies, practices, and house style; recruit Peer Reviewers; solicit materials for the journal.

The Scholarly Articles Editor is responsible for making contacts with scholars to solicit appropriate articles for the journal, for accepting the drafts of content, and for working with contributors to bring their work to completion.
The Exhibitions Review Editor is responsible for making contacts with critics and scholars to solicit appropriate content for the journal, for assigning exhibitions to specific reviewers, for accepting the drafts of content, and for working with contributors to bring their work to completion.

Key responsibilities, helpful skills:

These volunteer positions are essential for maintaining Openings as one of the few outlets for scholarly and critical writing on artists’ books. No prior experience in publishing is necessary, but members of the Editorial Board should be organized, attentive to detail, and interested in keeping up with publications, exhibitions, and awards in book arts.

CBAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS/ STUDENT AND COMMUNITY BOARD MEMBERS

We are looking to grow our CBAA Board of Directors

Are you a CBAA member who would like to be more involved with the organization? Join our Board of Directors, let your voice be heard, and make a difference! We are seeking members from the book arts community, especially members from beyond academia such as small presses, community organizations, book arts guilds, librarians, archivists, curators and museum professionals. If you are currently a graduate or undergraduate student, or interested in shaping the ways CBAA supports developing artists and a diverse field of practice, your voice is of specific importance.

Key responsibilities:

Participate in Board of Directors meetings every two months via Zoom
Attend the annual meeting of the association (funding support is available for in-person meetings)
The Board of Directors offers advice and direction to the activities of the association; their input and approval may be sought at any time deemed necessary by the president
Committee involvement is encouraged

Terms

Nominations are sought for the 2027-2028 term beginning in January 2027. Directors are elected for two (2) year terms at staggered intervals. No member may hold more than four (4) successive full terms as a director.

Join the Book Arts Tool Map (30 Jul 2026)

The Book Arts Tool Map focuses on large-scale and niche machinery such as board shears, guillotines, or fiber beaters for fellow artists with existing knowledge. To best serve users, map data could be filtered via location or type of tool/machinery. Tools are identified on the Map with unique icons linked to an artist’s preferred contact method; the Map also features a restricted zoom scale to protect locational privacy.

Montana Institute for the Book Arts | Summer Program (01 Sep 2026)

Montana Institute for the Book Arts

The Montana Institute for Book Arts is a summer program that brings together artists, craftspeople, and motivated students from across the country to share their professional knowledge and their love of bookmaking. Two sessions are split between a historic research lodge on Flathead Lake and the University of Montana’s campus in Missoula. Students will choose one in-depth workshop per session, with ample opportunities to meet and collaborate with fellow lovers of the book arts.
